Pamiętasz to uczucie, kiedy ktoś podczas gry w piłkę wykopał ją poza boisko i zaczęła się ona toczyć na ulicę lub w stronę rzeki? Trzeba było ją jak najszybciej złapać, żeby można było grać dalej. W przeciwnym razie mogła zostać zniszczona lub zniknąć już na zawsze.

Rozejrzyj się dookoła i sprawdź, czy jesteś w stanie dogrzebać się butem do ziemi. Ile liści, szczątków roślin czy trawy musisz odgarnąć? Prawdopodobnie nie ma ich zbyt dużo i jesteś w stanie w miarę bez problemu odsłonić fragment gleby. Nie zastanawia cię to, że nie toniesz w liściach po kolana? Kto usuwa opadające fragmenty roślin z lasu?

To, że nie musimy się przedzierać przez kopce opadłych liści, gałęzi czy kwiatów jest zasługą tzw. destruentów. To głównie grzyby i bakterie, które rozkładają materię, same z niej korzystając. To niezwykle ważne, bo dzięki nim pierwiastki, z których były zbudowane ciała innych organizmów, mogą być wykorzystane powtórnie. To właśnie te mikroskopijne organizmy są tymi, które "podają piłkę

z powrotem na boisko", żeby gra mogła być kontynuowana. Ty też składasz się tych pierwiastków, ta piłka wraca również dla ciebie. Tak działa obieg pierwiastków w przyrodzie.

Do you remember the feeling when someone kicked the ball out of bounds during a game and it rolled into the street or towards the river? You had to catch it as quickly as possible so you could continue playing. Otherwise, it could be damaged or disappear forever.
 

Look around and see if you can dig into the ground with your shoe. How many leaves, plant debris or grass do you have to move? Probably not too many, and you are able to uncover a patch of soil without too much trouble. Doesn’t it occur to you that you are not up to your knees in leaves? Who removes fallen plant parts from the forest?
 

The fact that we do not have to wade through mounds of fallen leaves, branches or flowers is thanks to the so-called decomposers. These are mainly fungi and bacteria that break down matter, using it themselves. This is extremely important because thanks to them, the elements from which the bodies of other organisms were built can be reused. These microscopic organisms are the ones who ‘pass the ball back into play’ so that the game can continue. You are also made up of these elements, this ball also comes back for you. This is how the cycle of elements works in nature.
